Tymber Dalton is, without question, one of the very best and most knowledgeable authors of BDSM fiction currently being published. The Reluctant Dom is the fourth book in the Suncoast Society series. But just in case you haven't read the previous three books in the series, don't worry! Each of the books in the series is a standalone novel, although you will understand the backstories of all the characters involved in each book better if you do read them in order. To that end, there's a complete listing of the entire series, in order, at the beginning of each of the Suncoast Society books. This book, in particular, is absolutely wonderful. Having read all of Ms. Dalton's books, I have to say this is my absolute favorite. This is Kaden's, Seth's, and Leah's story, and to demonstrate just how much I love it, I've read it at least a dozen times! Be prepared to have at least one box of tissues handy as you read this book. You're definitely going to need it!Kaden and Seth have known each other for over 40 years. They're not only best friends; they're more like brothers. Seth has always felt slightly inferior to Kaden, who is brilliant, full of kindness, and has no problems navigating social situations. But none of that matters to Kaden. Seth is the one person who's always been there for him, and he loves him unconditionally. After high school, Kaden headed for college while Seth went into basic training in the Army. Before they parted ways, however, one night, after killing a bottle of tequila together, Kaden and Seth experienced an incredible one-time three-way with a very willing co-ed. Neither has forgotten that night but they've also never really talked about it since then either
Seth has returned home. He's been through three wives and a construction business that was successful for a while. He's not destitute but he's also not rich. Right now, after divorce #3, he's living with his brother, Ben, and going back to school to get nursing degree since he was a medic in the Army. But, overall, he's happy with his life. While Seth was in the Army, Kaden went on to finish college and law school. He's now an incredibly successful attorney with a beautiful wife, Leah. They have a beautiful home, actually built by Seth's company during his construction career, and they couldn't be happier. Or so it would appear.
When Kaden asks Seth to lunch one day, he drops a bombshell. He's dying of pancreatic cancer. Seth's not just in shock. He's traumatized. At first, he thinks it's one of Kaden's famous practical jokes. But he soon realizes that Kaden is very serious, and his friend has a year, maybe two, left before he's gone. Seth tries everything to deny it. Has Kaden gotten a second opinion? Yeah, this was the third opinion. Surely there's some sort of treatment, maybe an experimental one, that he can try. But Kaden refuses to do anything that will diminish the quality of life that he has remaining to him. There's literally nothing that can be done. Seth is devastated beyond belief.
The real problem comes when Kaden has to tell Leah. What no one but Kaden and Leah know is that Leah has a troubled and abusive past. They've been married for over 20 years and to all outward appearances, they are happy and have no problems. But, as in all situations, it's what's under the surface that no one else can see that really makes a difference. Kaden and Leah have secrets no one else can possibly guess. Kaden needs Seth's help, not only to break the news to Leah but to help her through the coming months, to get her through the illness, his death, and the aftermath. Seth is horrified. He doesn't see how he can make any difference. But Kaden is his brother. He'll do whatever he can to help both of his best friends.
What Seth soon learns is that both Kaden and Leah are kinky, a part of the local BDSM scene. They belong to, are actually founding members of, the local BDSM club, Venture. Seth knows absolutely nothing about kink or BDSM. When Kaden springs his other surprise on Seth, that he wants Seth to learn about BDSM from Kaden and Leah and become the third in their relationship, Seth is dumbfounded! Yes, he's always been attracted to, and more than a little in love with, Leah. One of his ex-wives was the spitting image of Leah. But to intrude on his best friends' marriage and become a part of it while Kaden is dying? It's unthinkable!
This is only the beginning of a story that takes you from the heights of laughter, passion, and the joy and discovery of new and exciting experiences never experienced by any of the triad to the very depths of pain, agony, grief, and anguish. As Seth, Kaden, and Leah travel this road of deepening love, friendship, and learning about every aspect of each other and their experiences, both good and bad, you're taken on a roller coaster ride of emotions. Believe me, that box of tissues will be an absolute necessity!
The characters in The Reluctant Dom are so true to life and well-developed that you'll feel as if you're actually living the story along with them. The emotions are overwhelming at so many times. I cried and cried in places. I also felt absolute joy and overwhelming happiness at other times as well. And the BDSM aspects of the book are spot on. But what makes the book so excellent isn't just the truthfulness and accuracy of the BDSM. It is the genuineness of the relationships in the book and the true emotions that are expressed. When you're reading The Reluctant Dom, you become immersed in the lives of the characters and their emotions, lives, relationships...every aspect of their lives. It is rare for an author to find the perfect balance between character development, relationship dynamics and accuracy in every detail but Tymber Dalton does it in every book I've read. She has done it perfectly in this book.
Ms. Dalton has an intimate knowledge of the BDSM lifestyle, having been involved in it herself for a number of years, and all the Suncoast Society (and some of her standalone books and other series) reflect that knowledge. She shows the infinite variety of the lifestyle. Many other authors show ignorance of the nuances and differences in various dynamics. Tymber Dalton reflects her total understanding of those nuances and the intricacies involved in each individual type dynamic. There is no one specific way of living in the BDSM lifestyle. Each relationship is as unique as the individuals involved in the relationship. Ms. Dalton not only understands this but lives it herself, and that's what makes her books so intriguing and true to life. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to read a really fantastic, well-written and emotionally involving romance. The BDSM scenes just add icing to the cake of a perfect story. Kudos to Tymber Dalton for an amazing read!

If you do not enjoy erotic romance with explicit sexual and BDSM scenes then PLEASE carefully consider your purchase before buying any book in a genre you know you will not enjoy. There is always a synopsis of the book at the seller's website or on the dust jacket of the book. There are also reviews of the book available not only on Goodreads but at the booksellers' websites. PLEASE avail yourself of these resources so you are certain the book you are purchasing is what you want to read. ALSO, PLEASE DON'T LEAVE A NEGATIVE REVIEW OF A BOOK YOU PURCHASED WHEN YOU KNOW YOU WON'T ENJOY IT AS IT'S NOT FAIR TO THE AUTHOR! Ms. Dalton is an amazing author who works extremely hard to provide a quality work product, and if you know before you purchase a book that you will object to the subject matter contained therein, you are doing not only yourself, but the author, an extreme disservice. But if you do enjoy an extremely engaging and totally captivating romance with BDSM elements, I highly recommend The Reluctant Dom. Believe me, you will not be sorry you read it! So I loved this one.. You're probably wondering why I didn't give a full 5 stars then.. Well.. here's the thing... It's so weird. Cos although I have this very strong, emotional connection with one of our heroes, Seth, I still can't physically place what this man looks like. The reason why, is cos the author never gave me a foundation to work with in this regard. My mind's eye is completely blank in regards to Seth. She gives vague descriptions early on, concerning the other two main characters. So she gives you enough to maybe build on in your mind of what they may look like. But with Seth? For some reason, she kept this slate completely blank. Through the entire novel there was nothing given about what color his eyes are, his hair, facial features, nothing. So this unfortunately, bugged me alot. That's why I couldn't give the 5 stars I wanted to. I'm a details kinda girl, and I just never encountered this sort of non-description of a character in such a descriptive, emotional, & poignant story before. Especially when the character in question, is one of the main focal points of the story. Majority of this book is in his POV.
Moving On
Now, this book I must say is one of the very few BDSM theme novels that truly hits home with me. It hit on just about all points that I look for, when I read a story like this. This is not your typical BDSM trope. Instant Gratification novel. So if that's what you're expecting/hoping for, don't look here.
The story surrounding Kaden, Seth, & Leah is nothing short of incredible to me. The relationship dynamics that you see unfold & play out here, will rip you apart & put you back together again. Stronger. More self aware, somehow. It's hard cos I really can't explain it without sounding too sappy or giving something away to those who have yet to read this. I feel like the journey here needs to be experienced first hand, for you to truly get it & come to your own conclusion of how you may feel about it.
I will say this though.. if you ever doubt what an unselfish, unwavering, & unconditional love looks like, look here. The very definition of these things are here in it's pages. The layers & levels in which you experience these things, with all 3 characters, are just raw in many respects. Beautiful in all of them, even the hard VERY hard, moments. I cannot stress through any eloquent words just how deep, on so many levels, that this story truly touched me. And Kaden has just left me in a state of...
*tears* I LOVE HIM SO MUH-MUH-MUCH!!!!
Seth I love this man immensely. And I am so very, very proud of him.
Leah I tip my hat to you girl. Just wow.
If you read only one novel out of this series, nay, out of this genre, I strongly suggest you read this one.

Have a large box of tissues ready, I guarantee you will need them. A wonderful story, but it is a heart breaker. I loved the characters and felt their love for each other and how they each made their way through this sad story. You will want to read more of the series to find out how they make out, but it is a stand alone story. A great read.
I have literally read thousands of books and I can honestly say that this is one of the best love stories that I have ever read. Even if you don't care for or agree with best, I don't know how someone could dislike this book!
Tymber has created a piece of art where the reader no longer just reads the book but will feel as though they are part of the book. You are able to feel the characters love, pain, joy, sorrow and yes, their loss on a level not normally reached in a book.
